Examining the first synchronous telecollaborative sessions: the rhetorical organization and use of politeness strategies in teletandem
Telecollaboration or virtual exchange refers to pedagogical initiatives that connect geographically distant learners who meet regularly through digital technology tools and work together towards a common goal. Such projects have been put forward for over 30 years by language teachers, especially in the tandem format, which involves speakers of different languages helping each other learn their languages, like in teletandem. Teletandem, similarly to other telecollaborative projects, typically includes a first synchronous session for participants to exchange information and get to know each other better. In this talk, based on the analysis of 10 initial teletandem oral sessions, I will present what we have already learned about this first session in terms of how students organize their discourse to reach their goals and which strategies they use to save their faces and establish cooperation. The study of such conventions allows us to identify the expectations and norms of communities formed in telecollaborative contexts and, therefore, discuss pedagogical implications.
