Tome I, p. 12<\/p>\n<p>Chavannes adds the following note to this passage:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u00ab\u00a0The names <em>Fong-heou<\/em> and <em>Li-mou<\/em> gave rise to a legend that <em>Hoang-fou Mi<\/em> recounts in his <em>Ti wang che ki.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><em>According to the legend, <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Hoang-ti<\/span><\/em><\/strong><strong> saw in a dream a great wind sweeping away all the dust, then a man holding a huge bow and guarding sheep.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>He concluded that heaven was thus indicating the names of those he should take as advisors.<br \/>\nIndeed, wind is called<\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>fong<\/em><\/span> \u2014 and dust is called <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>keou<\/em><\/span>; by removing the key on the left from the latter character, we obtain exactly the name <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>Fong-heou<\/em><\/span>; on the other hand, the enormous bow suggests the idea of strength, <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>li<\/em><\/span>, and the fact of guarding sheep suggests the idea of a shepherd, <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>mou<\/em><\/span>; this gives us the name <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>Li-mou<\/em><\/span>.<br \/>\n<em>Hoang-ti<\/em> did not rest until he had found two men with these names.\u00a0\u00bb<br \/>\n<\/strong>Chavannes,<em> M\u00e9moires historiques de Se-ma Ts&rsquo;ien \u00a0 <\/em>T1 note 130, p. 133.<\/p>\n<p>Se-ma Ts\u2019ien, <em>Les M\u00e9moires historiques de Se-ma Ts\u2019ien<\/em> (<em>Shiji<\/em>).
