Lorsqu\u2019il pleut apr\u00e8s qu\u2019on a ex\u00e9cut\u00e9 la danse de la pluie, qu\u2019est-ce que cela signifie\u00a0?<\/p>\n
Rien. C\u2019est exactement comme s\u2019il pleuvait sans que la danse ait \u00e9t\u00e9 ex\u00e9cut\u00e9e. Accomplir le rite pour \u201csauver\u201d le soleil ou la lune des \u00e9clipses, ex\u00e9cuter la danse de la pluie en p\u00e9riode de s\u00e9cheresse, pratiquer la divination avant de prendre des d\u00e9cisions importantes, tout cela ne vise pas \u00e0 obtenir ce qu\u2019on demande mais \u00e0 entretenir la culture. Ce qui pour l\u2019homme de bien est culturel, pour l\u2019homme de peu est surnaturel. La premi\u00e8re attitude est faste, la seconde n\u00e9faste<\/p>\n

You pray for rain and it rains. Why? For no particular reason, I say. It is just as though you had not prayed for rain and it rained anyway. The sun and moon undergo an eclipse and you try to save them\u00a0; a drought occurs and you pray for rain; you consult the arts of divination before making a decision on some important matter. But it is not as though you could hope accomplish anything by such ceremonies. They are done merely for ornament, but the common people regard them as supernatural. He who considers them as ornament is fortunate; he who regard them as supernatural is unfortunate<\/p>\n

When it rains after you pray for rain, it is just like when it rains when you didn\u2019t pray for rain. Yet during a drought officials must still pray for rain \u2014\u00a0not because it has any effect on the natural world, but because it has effect on people. What Xunzi believes ritual does will be examined later.<\/p>\n
