{"id":4757,"date":"2021-10-18T11:33:44","date_gmt":"2021-10-18T09:33:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/?p=4757"},"modified":"2025-04-21T14:32:07","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T12:32:07","slug":"cause-to-effect-argumentation-e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/cause-to-effect-argumentation-e\/","title":{"rendered":"Cause To Effect Argumentation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000; font-size: 14pt;\">Argument from CAUSE TO EFFECT<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Causal argumentation claims the existence of a causal link.<br \/>\nArgumentation from effect to cause, or argumentation by the consequences, assumes the existence of a causal link and concludes from an effect to a cause.<\/p>\n<p><em>Argumentation from cause to effect<\/em> assumes the existence of a <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/cause-effect-the-causal-link-e\/\">causal law (a cause-effect relationship<\/a>). The actual occurrence of the cause is materialized by the necessary occurrence of the effect. Argument:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">There is a state of affairs <strong>c<\/strong>. This state of affairs <strong>c<\/strong> falls into the category of facts <strong>C<\/strong>.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Cause- Effect Rule: There is a known causal law linking state of affairs <strong>C<\/strong> to state of affairs <strong>E<\/strong>.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Conclusion: <strong>C<\/strong> will \/ must have an effect <strong>e<\/strong>, of type <strong>E<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The argumentation from cause allows <strong>prediction<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">This bridge is made of metal.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">When heated, this metal expands by a certain coefficient.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">In summer the bridge will expand by such and such amount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The argumentation from cause to effect can be refuted by showing that the causal relation it presupposes is poorly constructed, see Causal argument<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pragmatic argument<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This preceding argument from cause to effect can be supplemented by a <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/pragmatic-argument-e\/\">pragmatic argument<\/a>.<br \/>\nStep (3) of a <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/pragmatic-argument-e\/\">pragmatic argument<\/a> consists in an argument from a cause to an (hypothetical) effect, an evaluation of this effect, followed by step (4) consisting in an argument from this effect to a cause:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Such dilatation can have dangerous consequences: Expansion can twist metal.<\/p>\n<p>Precautions must therefore be taken:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Adequate expansion space must be provided for the bridge deck.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Argument from the existence of a <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/motives-and-reasons-e\/\">motive for action<\/a> to the action proper<\/strong><br \/>\nThe argument from motive to action mirrors the argument from cause to effect:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">He had the desire and the ability to do it, he found the opportunity: so, he did it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Argument from CAUSE TO EFFECT Causal argumentation claims the existence of a causal link.
