Consensus as agreement<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">See <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/agreement\/\">Agreement<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/persuasion-eng\/\">Persuasion<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 12pt;\">2 Argument from consensus<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The label <em>argument from consensus<\/em>, <em>appeal to consensus<\/em>, covers a family of arguments claiming that a belief is true or that things must be done in such and such a way on the basis that everyone thinks or does so, and that other proposals should be rejected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">We have always thought, wished, done &#8230; so; so, buy (please, do&#8230;) so.<br \/>\nEverybody loves <em>so-and-so<\/em> product.<br \/>\nEverybody puts <em>so-and-so<\/em> ketchup on their burgers!<\/p>\n<p>It implies that by disregarding the existing consensus, the proponent of a new action or a new idea, that is the opponent of the consensus, risks being excluded from that community, see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/burden-of-proof-e\/\">burden of proof<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The <em>universal consensus<\/em> argument<\/strong> claims that \u201c<em>all people in all times have thought this way things have always been done this way<\/em>\u201d.<br \/>\nThe existence of God has been argued on the basis of the universal consensus argument.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The argument from <\/strong>the <em>relative (partial) consensus<\/em> includes the argument from <em>majority<\/em>, the argument from <em>number<\/em> (Latin <em>ad numerum<\/em>; <em>numerus<\/em>, \u201cnumber\u201d) and related expressions:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The majority \/ many people &#8230; think, wish, do &#8230; X.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Three million Syldavians have already adopted it!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">My book is selling better than yours.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">He is a famous actor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Common Sense<\/strong> \u2014 The argument of consensus is the kind of authority generously granted to <em>traditional wisdom<\/em> or to <em>common sense<\/em>, S. <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/authoritye\/\">Authority<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">I <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">know that all true Syldavians agree with this decision<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Only the extremes attack me, all people of common sense will agree with me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>The populist argument<\/em> is based on a real or supposed consensus among (or attributed to) the people, see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/4589-2\/\"><em>Ad Populum<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Bandwagon<\/em><\/strong><strong> argument and fallacy<\/strong> \u2014 The bandwagon argument is a special case of the consensus argument. The bandwagon is the decorated chariot that leads the orchestra through town, the bandwagon argument adds joy and enthusiasm to the dry consensus argument. To get on the bandwagon is to follow the popular movement, to participate in a popular \u201cemotion\u201d in the etymological sense of \u201ca public upheaval\u201d. Joining a party to have fun and sing along should not be condemned as systematically fallacious; but, from the perspective of any opposing party, climbing on the bandwagon can be seen as fallacious, as a follow-the-group or follow-my-leader attitude, sheepish behavior, as uncritically adopting the views of the most vocal or visible group.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CONSENSUS 1.
