{"id":4826,"date":"2021-10-19T11:00:46","date_gmt":"2021-10-19T09:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/?p=4826"},"modified":"2025-03-07T11:49:17","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T10:49:17","slug":"convergent-linked-serial-e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/convergent-linked-serial-e\/","title":{"rendered":"Convergent \u2014 Linked \u2014 Serial"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">CONVERGENT, LINKED, SERIAL<\/span> Argumentation<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>The conclusion of an argumentation is usually expressed in a single statement, possibly expanded in a short closing speech, see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/argument-conclusion-e\/\">Argument &#8211; Conclusion<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe arguments, i.e., the part of the argumentative discourse that supports and sometimes surrounds the conclusion, can be considerably developed along quite different lines:<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/convergent-arguments-e\/\"><em>Convergent argumentation<\/em><\/a>, also called <em>multiple argumentation<\/em>, combines several co-oriented arguments.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/linked-argumentation-e\/\"><em>Linked argumentation<\/em><\/a>, also called <em>coordinate argumentation<\/em> consists of several statements that combine to form an argument.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/serial-argumentation-e\/\"><em>Serial argumentation<\/em><\/a>, also called <em>subordinate argumentation<\/em> consist of a sequence of argumentations, such as the <em>conclusion<\/em> of the first one is taken as an <em>argument<\/em> to support a second one and so on, see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/polysyllogism\">sorite.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One caveat: these categories are logical categories; they assume that arguments correspond to clean-cut, continuous explicit linguistic segments, just like premises in a logical reasoning. This is not the case in ordinary language, where arguments can be intertwined, an argument can contain another argument,\u00a0 and episodes of expository language can take a distinctly argumentative turn.
