Methods for constructing a sound definition<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Definitions based on <em>common usage<\/em>, on the <em>true meaning<\/em> of the word, on <em>the scientific meaning<\/em> of the word can be pitted against each other.<\/p>\n<p>There are rules for<em> establishing <\/em>a correct definition, and therefore, critical rules for <em>evaluating<\/em>, definitions, see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/based-on-exploit\/\">Arguments establishing vs. exploiting a relationship<\/a>.<br \/>\nThese rules depend on the social or scientific fields to which the defined entities belong, and adapt to the different types of definitions<strong>.<\/strong> The more general ones are.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(i)<\/strong>\u00a0Does the definition <strong>correctly <em>disambiguate<\/em> the term<\/strong> according to its meanings (homonymy) and acceptances (polysemy)? see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/ambiguity\/\">Ambiguity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(ii)<\/strong>\u00a0Does the definition <strong><em>avoid circularity<\/em>?<\/strong> If not, it is a <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/vicious-circle-e\/\">vicious circle<\/a>. Since words are defined by words, the whole dictionary is actually circular. As explanations or arguments in general, definitions should try to avoid circularity as much as possible; that is, the definition (<em>definiens<\/em>) cannot use the word it is supposed to define (<em>definiendum<\/em>), nor a (near) synonym of the word. Nevertheless, a definition by synonyms or by the simple negation of an antonym is helpful if one of these defining words is better known than the <em>definiendum<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(iii)<\/strong>\u00a0Does the definition <em>cover all\u00a0<strong> uses<\/strong><\/em><strong> of the word<\/strong>? Does the meaning of a passage remain the same if the <em>definiens<\/em> is replaced by the <em>definiendum<\/em>? If not, the definition should be revised.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(iv)<\/strong>\u00a0Does the definition make it possible <strong><em>to distinguish those entities<\/em> that are called by that name from those that are not<\/strong>? A definition can be criticized for being <strong><em>too broad<\/em> <\/strong>(it applies to heterogeneous objects or beings) or for being <strong><em>too narrow<\/em><\/strong> (it excludes objects or beings that it would be desirable to include). see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/definition-and-argument-e\/\">Definition and Argument, \u00a7 2<\/a>, for the role of ostension and exemplification.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(v)<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>Does it help?<\/em><\/strong> That is, does it provide enough <em>information<\/em> to clarify the meaning of the word, and, if necessary, does it give some functional clues, or point to the scientific or technical uses of the word?<\/p>\n<p><strong>(vi)\u00a0<\/strong>Is the definition <strong><em>concise, clear, and simple<\/em>?<\/strong> Does it use unknown, obscure or ambiguous words?<\/p>\n<p><strong>(vii)<\/strong> Is the definition <strong><em>objective<\/em><\/strong>? Does it exclude the speaker&rsquo;s value judgments and ideological <strong>preferences<\/strong> about the entities or qualities being defined? see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/orientation-e\/\">Orientation<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/definition-iv-persuasive-definition-e\/\">Persuasive definitions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Methods and rules such as those mentioned above serve as a guide for making definitions and, consequently, for criticizing them.<br \/>\n\u2014 The following set of available arguments in their positive form argue that the definition is sound, and in their negative form they argue that the definition is unsound.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(i) it correctly disambiguates the definiens<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(ii) It avoids circularity<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(iii) It covers all the uses of the word<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(iv) It is neither too broad nor too narrow<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(v) It is helpful<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(vi) It is concise, clear, and simple<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(vii) It is objective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 These arguments are mobilized in debates about definitions (Schiappa 1993; 2000), that is, when there is a <em>stasis of definition (<\/em>see infra), see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/true-meaning-of-the-word\/\">True meaning of a word<\/a><br \/>\n\u2014\u00a0They are fundamental to the criticism of <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/definition-iii-argumentations-based-on-a-definition\/\">argumentations <em>that use a definition<\/em><\/a>, showing for example that the underlying definitions are poorly constructed and do not follow this or that rule.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 12pt;\">2. Stasis of definition<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A definitional <em>stasis<\/em> occurs when it appears that discourse and counter-discourse appear to be based on incompatible definitions of the same object:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">S1: \u2014 <em>The right to freedom of speech and demonstration is fundamental to democracy.<br \/>\n<\/em>S2: \u2014 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">What is fundamental in a democracy, is the right to have an iPhone and something to eat.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A definitional question arises: which features are essential (central) features and which ones are incidental (peripheral) to characterize a democratic state?<\/p>\n<p>Incompatible categorizations lead in a question of definition:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">S1: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2014 <em>Accidental death of a Syldavian diplomat<br \/>\n<\/em>S2: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2014 <em>Assassination of a Syldavian diplomat<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>Classified information has been leaked:<br \/>\n<\/em>S1: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2014 <em>A new manifestation of the malfunctioning of the Syldavian services<br \/>\n<\/em>S2: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2014 <em>There are traitors within our services<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The investigator, in the role of the third party, transforms the two conflicting discourses into an argumentative question, and initiates an investigation to clarify what happened, based on legal definitions:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">What is murder? What is an accident?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">What are the crucial differences between negligence and treason?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The stasis of definition can develop as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>S1<sub>1<\/sub><\/strong>: \u2014 <em>Syldavia is now a real democracy now!<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>S2<sub>1<\/sub><\/strong>: \u2014 <em>How dare you talk about democracy in a country that does not recognize the rights of minorities?<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>S1<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong>: \u2014 <em>According to the dictionary, democracy is &#8230;; nothing in this definition mentions the rights of minorities; so, Syldavia is certainly a true democracy<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>S2<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong>: \u2014 <em>This definition is bad, and ideologically biased.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The confrontation between the positions <strong>S1<sub>1<\/sub><\/strong> and <strong>S2<sub>1<\/sub><\/strong> raises a question of <em>categorization<\/em>.<br \/>\n\u2014 <strong>S1<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong> rejects <strong>S2<sub>1<\/sub><\/strong>&lsquo;s objection by referring to the dictionary; he or she could just as well have referred to the accepted conventions, international law, consensus, etc.<br \/>\n\u2014 <strong>S2<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong> ratifies the <em>definitional deadlock.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to Humpty Dumpty, the best way to resolve of a definitional stasis is to appeal to power:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">[Humpty Dumpty] [\u2026]\u00a0\u2014 and that shows that there are three hundred and sixty-four days when you might get un-birthday presents\u2014\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cCertainly,\u201d said Alice.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cAnd only <em>one<\/em> for birthday presents, you know. There\u2019s glory for you!\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know what you mean by \u2018glory\u2019\u201d, Alice said.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. \u201cOf course, you don\u2019t \u2013 till I tell you. I meant \u2018there\u2019s a nice knock-down argument for you!\u201d\u2019<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cBut \u2018glory\u2019 doesn\u2019t mean \u2018a nice knock-down argument,\u2019\u201d Alice objected.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cWhen <em>I<\/em> use a word,\u201d Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, \u201cit means just what I choose it to mean\u2014neither more nor less.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cThe question is,\u201d said Alice, \u201cwhether you <em>can<\/em> make words mean so many different things.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cThe question is,\u201d said Humpty Dumpty, \u201cwhich is to be master\u2014that\u2019s all.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Alice was too much puzzled to say anything, so after a minute Humpty Dumpty began again.
