{"id":4858,"date":"2021-10-19T13:47:25","date_gmt":"2021-10-19T11:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/?p=4858"},"modified":"2025-02-28T10:50:27","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T09:50:27","slug":"correlative-terms-e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/correlative-terms-e\/","title":{"rendered":"Correlative Terms"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">CORRELATIVE TERMS<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Correlative terms are also called <em>relative<\/em> or <em>reciprocal<\/em> terms, and may be considered as <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/opposite-e\/\">opposite terms<\/a>. <em>Mother<\/em> and <em>child<\/em> are correlative terms, that is, they are linked by the immediate inference:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">if <strong>A<\/strong> is the mother of <strong>B<\/strong>, then <strong>B<\/strong> is the child of <strong>A<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Correlative terms are defined by reference to one another; <em>mother<\/em> is defined as \u201cwoman with children\u201d; <em>child<\/em> as \u201cson or daughter of <strong>M<\/strong>\u201d.<br \/>\nThe following terms are correlatives:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">cause \/ effect \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 double \/ half \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 master \/slave<br \/>\naction \/ passion\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 sell \/ buy<\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking, two predicates <strong>R1<\/strong> and <strong>R2<\/strong> are in a correlation relation when<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">A_<strong>R1<\/strong>_B &lt;=&gt; B_<strong>R2<\/strong>_A<br \/>\n<strong>A<\/strong>_<em>mother<\/em>_<strong>B<\/strong> &lt;=&gt; <strong>B<\/strong>_<em>child<\/em>_<strong>A<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cBy definition, correlatives are opposites\u201d; they are \u201contologically simultaneous\u201d (Hamelin [1905], p. 133). The topic of the correlative is n\u00b03 on Aristotle&rsquo;s list:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Another line of proof is based upon correlative ideas (<em>Rhet<\/em>, II, 23, 3; RR, p. 357)<\/p>\n<p>The topic is exemplified by the enthymemes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Where it is right to command obedience, it must have been right to obey the command.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">\u00a0The tax-farmer: \u201dif it is no disgrace for you to sell it, it is no disgrace for us to buy it\u201d (<em>ibid<\/em>.).<\/p>\n<p>These inferences have limitations:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">If it is legal\/tolerated to buy 2 g of marijuana, then one may sell 2 g of marijuana.<\/p>\n<p>But what about \u201cpossessing\u201d\u00a0and \u201cbuying\u201d?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">if it is legal\/tolerated to possess 2g of marijuana,<br \/>\nthen it is legal\/tolerated to buy 2 g,<br \/>\nthen it is legal\/tolerated to sell it<\/p>\n<p>given that for me, the only way to get marijuana is to buy it. But the law can make a distinction between two kinds of \u201cpossession\u201d: the possession of drugs <em>for private consumption<\/em> is not an offence, while possession <em>for trafficking<\/em> is.<\/p>\n<p>The following case deals with two pairs of correlatives, <em>know<\/em> \/ <em>learn<\/em>, and <em>order<\/em> \/ <em>obey<\/em>, articulated by the topic of the opposites:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">If you want to command, you must first learn to obey.<br \/>\nThe executive, when he was on his way up, had to learn to obey so that he should know how to command (quoted in <em>Linguee<\/em>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CORRELATIVE TERMS Correlative terms are also called relative or reciprocal terms, and may be considered as opposite terms.
