{"id":4883,"date":"2021-10-20T10:17:13","date_gmt":"2021-10-20T08:17:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/?p=4883"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:21:43","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T13:21:43","slug":"dismissal-e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/dismissal-e\/","title":{"rendered":"Dismissal"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #ff0000;\">DISMISSAL<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>When applied to discourse, <em>dismissal<\/em> is a method of processing out an opponent&rsquo;s discourse, on the brink of <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/refutation-e\/\">refutation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/destruction-of-speech-e\/\">destruction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #0000ff;\"><strong>1. Dismissal as the final stage of refutation<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>An argument can be dismissed <strong>after due consideration<\/strong>. In this case, dismissal is the final step of a conclusive refutation.<br \/>\nThe standard forms of refutation are based on a substantial examination of the content of the rejected speech, or on more or less relevant considerations about the person holding it. Even in the latter case, the refutation, however poorly argued, is at least backed by some justificatory discourse.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #0000ff;\"><strong>2. <\/strong><strong>Rejecting the argument without considering it <\/strong><strong>(<em>ad lapidem<\/em>)<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>The opponent can <em>reject<\/em> a discourse simply by declaring that the bad quality of the proposed argument is self-evident and self-denouncing:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>No comment.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>Your arguments are shabby, inadequate, miserable, distressing<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>I will not give your statement the honor of a rebuttal.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>What you say is not even wrong.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Uncle Toby\u2019s reaction, \u201cwhistling half a dozen bars of <em>Lillabullero<\/em>\u201d \u201cwhen any thing, which he deem\u2019d very absurd, was offerd\u201d\u00a0 is an example of such reaction , \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/ab-ad-ex-eng\/\">S. <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/ab-ad-ex-eng\/\"><em>Ab<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/ab-ad-ex-eng\/\"><strong> \u2013<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/ab-ad-ex-eng\/\">, <em>ad<\/em> \u2013, <em>ex<\/em> \u2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In ancient rhetoric, this move which declares the argument \u201cchildish\u201d or \u201cobviously absurd or practically null\u00a0\u00bb, is called <em>apodioxis<\/em>, (Dupriez 1984, <em>Apodioxis<\/em>; Molini\u00e9 1992, <em>Apodioxis<\/em>), S. <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/pathetic-argument-e\/\">Pathetic argument<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The opponent may, in good faith, dismiss an argument as self-refuting, which leads to paradoxical situations. If Big Jones&rsquo; discourse is truly self-refuting, then:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The more he talks, the more foolish he appears, the fewer votes he will get.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But this is a dangerous strategy, inspired more by the self-confidence of the arguer&rsquo;s confidence in his party&rsquo;s arguments than by any self-refuting evidence about Big Jones&rsquo; discourse.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the opponent may adopt a strategy of <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/irony-e\/\">irony<\/a>, and contribute to the spread of his opponent\u2019s speech. This is the extraordinary case reported by Wayne Booth about events taking at his university, in s which students were clashed with their university administration:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">At one point, things got so bad that each side found itself reduplicating broadsides produced by the other side, and distributing them, in thousands of copies, without comment; to each side it seemed as if the other side\u2019s rhetoric was self-damning, so absurd had it become. Used in particularly contentious argumentative situations, such a maneuver makes any deal between the discussants impossible, see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/conditions-of-discussion-e\/\">Conditions of discussion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From an ethotic perspective, such a (non-) arguer displays a kind of moral <em>indignation<\/em>, while the opponent may accuse her of <em>arrogance<\/em> and contempt.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em>Ad lapidem<\/em><\/strong><strong> argument\u00a0(Lat. <em>lapis<\/em>, \u201cstone\u201d)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The name of this argument is derived from a famous incident in which Dr. Samuel Johnson claimed to disprove Bishop Berkeley&rsquo;s immaterialist philosophy (that there are no material objects, only minds and the ideas in those minds) by kicking a large stone and saying \u2018I refute it thus\u2019 (Wikipedia, <em>Ad lapidem<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>This clear <em>disdain for verbal argument<\/em> is akin to \u00ab\u00a0the proof of the pudding is in the eating\u00a0\u00bb, a popular practical proof by <em>facts and actions<\/em>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DISMISSAL When applied to discourse, dismissal is a method of processing out an opponent&rsquo;s discourse, on the brink of refutation and destruction. 1.
