EPITROPE<\/span><\/h1>\n

An epitrope<\/em> is defined as, \u201ca figure of rhetoric that consists in conceding something disputable, in order to lend more authority to one’ argument<\/span>\u201d (Littr\u00e9, Epitrope<\/em>), see concession<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Under ordinary conditions, as described by Grice’s principles, the arguer refutes everything possible, and concedes everything else. Therefore, \u201cPeter concedes P<\/strong><\/em>\u201d pragmatically implies that Peter is unable to refute P<\/strong><\/span>.
\nIf the arguer concedes a doubtful<\/strong> proposition, he is considered a poor arguer; if he concedes something that is obviously refutable<\/strong> the speech is interpreted as ironic.<\/p>\n

P<\/strong> is obviously wrong:
\n<\/em>S<\/strong> \u2014 P<\/em><\/strong>, okay, but \/ nevertheless Q<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Embedding P<\/strong> in a concessive structure, assigns P<\/strong> to the opponent, whether he\u00a0 wants to endorse it.<\/p>\n

Regarding a writer whose stylistic qualities were just discussed negatively:<\/span>
\nI’m prepared to consider him a good stylist, but he doesn’t know what a plot is.<\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n

Irony<\/a> can also arise from exaggerating<\/a> the position granted:<\/p>\n

I may have visions, but I also have some hard evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n
