Maximization <\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 12pt;\">Exaggeration as amplification<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Aristotle defines exaggeration as the use of \u201cindignant language [\u2026]\u00a0painting a highly colored picture of the situation\u201d\u00a0(<em>Rhet<\/em>, II, 24, 1401b1-10, RR, p. 383), and notes its spectacular and curious effect in legal situations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">If the defendant does so, he produces an impression of his innocence; and if the prosecutor goes into a passion, he produces an impression of the defendant&rsquo;s guilt. (<em>ibid<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 12pt;\">Exaggeration to absurdity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Exaggerating to the point of absurdity is a refutation technique known as <em>adynaton<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The arguer uses both hyperbole and apodioxis <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">to establish a position by the exaggerating the absurdity of the opposing position<\/span>\u201d (Molini\u00e9 1992, <em>Adynaton<\/em>; for <em>apodioxis, <\/em>see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/dismissal-e\/\">dismissal<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is a variant of refutation from the absurd, taken to the ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">To avoid accidents, leave your car at home!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">To prevent recidivism, let&rsquo;s execute all offenders!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The mechanisms of argumentation are the same as those of the slippery slope argument, an invitation: \u201c<em>Don&rsquo;t stop now, the way is so good<\/em>\u201d see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/slippery-slope-e\/\">slippery slope<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/laughter-and-seriousness-e\/\">laughter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">You want to be vegetarian? No problem, eat salad and graze on the lawn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The following passage rejects and ridicules the idea that the criminally insane should be judged like everyone else by showing that the concept of criminal behavior is meaningless without considering of intent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Let us judge all criminal acts. Regardless of the perpetrators&rsquo; the level of consciousness . Why not judge a dog too? The news offers a tragic opportunity to further advance justice. [&#8230;] And why does the hurricane that recently devastated the West Indies, causing many casualties, and immense property damage, escape the wrath of justice?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">M. Horeau, [<em>Obvious Delirium<\/em>]. <em>Le Canard Encha\u00een\u00e9,<\/em> 2007 <a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 12pt;\">2. Minimization, or Euphemism<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Minimization strategies are used to deflect an accusation, when <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">bad behavior is acknowledged as such, but its material significance is reduced<\/span>. For example, if I&rsquo;m accused of stealing a bicycle,\u00a0 I might defend myself by saying: \u201c<em>Oh yeah, but it&rsquo;s just an old broken worthless bicycle<\/em>.\u201d<br \/>\nThe feeling associated with minimization is <em>indifference. <\/em>The accuser is portrayed as <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">overly excited<\/span> and should<em>\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">calm down<\/span>,<\/em> see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/calm\/\">calm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Everything can be euphemized, even torture:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>On July 30, 1984, Christian von Wernich, a chaplain [<\/em>capell\u00e1n<em>] for the Buenos Aires police, now a priest in Bragado, in a statement to the magazine <\/em>Siete D\u00edas<em>:<br \/>\n<\/em>If you tell me that Camps has tortured some poor guy that no one knows, well, okay. But how could he have tortured Jacobo Timerman, a journalist under constant and decisive worldwide pressure, if only for that!
