{"id":5087,"date":"2021-10-21T13:32:56","date_gmt":"2021-10-21T11:32:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/?p=5087"},"modified":"2025-06-16T11:27:27","modified_gmt":"2025-06-16T09:27:27","slug":"justification-and-deliberation-e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/justification-and-deliberation-e\/","title":{"rendered":"Justification and Deliberation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #ff0000;\"><strong>JUSTIFICATION &#8211; DELIBERATION<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>People<strong> <em>justify<\/em> <\/strong>an answer to an argumentative question that has already been posed and accepted, either individually, or as a <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/roles-proponent-opponent-third-party\/\">third parties<\/a>,\u00a0 or as a group that has now reached a decision. \u00a0They <strong><em>deliberate<\/em><\/strong> on an open argumentative question, when the participants\u00a0 have not yet reached a decision.<br \/>\n<span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong><em>Deliberation<\/em><\/strong> occurs when there is doubt about what to do or believe<\/span>, whereas <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong><em>justification<\/em><\/strong> occurs after a decision has been made.<\/span><br \/>\nThe starting point determines the difference between justification and deliberation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>\u2014\u00a0Deliberation intervenes in contexts of<em> discovery<\/em>.<\/strong> It moves from argument to conclusion.<\/span> A decision must be made, so I <em>deliberate<\/em> to construct it through internal or collaborative deliberation. The arguments condition the conclusion. The argumentation:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Question: <em>Should I resign?<br \/>\n<\/em>Deliberation: I weigh the pros and cons.<br \/>\nThe answer states the conclusion: <em>I resign.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">\u2014 In the context of <em>justification,<\/em> the discourse shifts from conclusion to argument<\/span>.<\/strong> I have resigned, this is a practical reality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Question: <em>Why did you resign? Justify this unexpected decision!<br \/>\n<\/em>Justification: <em>I was sick and didn&rsquo;t get along with my boss.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When I have to account for a decision I&rsquo;ve made,<span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"> I <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/explanation-e\/\">explain<\/a><\/em><\/strong> it.<\/span> I recount the good reasons I made it, and, if necessary, invent new ones. In this case, the conclusion determines the arguments.<br \/>\nDeliberation leads to a conclusion introduced by <strong><em>so<\/em>, <em>therefore<\/em><\/strong>; while justification in introduces good reasons with <em><strong>since<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The mechanisms of argumentation apply to both justification and deliberation. I deliberate, I reach a conclusion and make my decision. When I am asked to justify the decision, I use the same arguments, that were <em>deliberative<\/em> to explain it.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of deliberation, there is real uncertainty about the conclusion, which emerges during the course of a cognitive and interactive process.<br \/>\nIn the case of justification, the conclusion is already there. <em>Justification<\/em> tends to eliminate doubts and counterarguments, while stimulating the production of new arguments.<br \/>\nPrivate arguments made during internal deliberation may not align with the arguments given publicly to justify the same conclusion, see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/motives-and-reasons-e\/\">motives and reasons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Situations of full deliberation and full justification<\/strong> are borderline cases. In the first case, I hesitate between several options, while in the second case I fully assume my decision and I&rsquo;m sure I did well.<br \/>\nThe same arguer may oscillate between justification and deliberation if, for example, during justification, he questions the decision he has already made, or is about to change his mind.<\/p>\n<p>If we assume that every argument presented as deliberative is actually oriented toward an unconscious decision, then <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>everything is justificatory.<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nHowever the institutional organization of debates reintroduces deliberation.
