Appeal to Moderation vs. Appeal to Radicalism<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>In politics, <em>moderation<\/em> is opposed to <em>radicalism<\/em> or extremism, just as reformism is opposed to revolution. Arguments from <em>moderation<\/em> emphasize stickin to the practical, compromising, taking inclusive positions, and changing things little by little.<br \/>\nThe appeal to <em>radicalism<\/em> emphasizes the urgency of decisions, the need for new beginnings, avoiding dead ends in discussions. It also emphasizes the will to remain faithful to principles that can be framed as antinomies, \u201c<em>freedom or death<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>gTwo opposing ethos and emotional states are associated with moderation and radicalism: respectively conservative <em>vs.<\/em> progressive; open to dialogue and compromise <em>vs.<\/em> uncompromising; realist <em>vs.<\/em> idealist; serenity <em>vs.<\/em> exaltation; etc.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 14pt;\">2. The Middle Ground Argument<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>The <em>middle-ground <\/em><em>argument<\/em> justifies an action by showing that it does not satisfy any of the opposing parties. The speaker takes the position of the responsible third party, see <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/roles-proponent-opponent-third-party\/\">roles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Stay away from extremes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The fact that both the far right and the far left are attacking my policy clearly shows that it is a good policy.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Christianity has restored true proportions in architecture, as in other arts .
