Argument of Progress<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>By definition, \u201cprogress moves forward\u201d; the <em>progress<\/em> <em>argument <\/em>evaluates t<span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">he <em>most recent<\/em> as the <em>best<\/em><\/span>. If <strong>F1<\/strong> and <strong>F2<\/strong> are in the same category, and if <strong>F2<\/strong> comes after <strong>F1<\/strong>, then <strong>F2<\/strong> is preferable to <strong>F1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">The <em>progress<\/em> <em>argument<\/em> rejects the <a style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\" href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/authoritye\/\">authority<\/a> of elders and their practices, which are considered <em>outdated<\/em>; the contemporary practices that follow their model are dismissed as <em>regressive<\/em>, even <em>repulsive<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Cats are no longer burned on cathedral forecourts, animal fights were outlawed in 1833, owls are no longer nailed to barn doors, and rats are no longer crucified as targets for darts. Whatever may be said in bullfighting circles, bullfighting with killing is doomed. (<em>Le Monde<\/em>, Sept. 21-22, 1986)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The argument is organized around the following operations.<br \/>\n&#8211; First, bullfighting is <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\"><em>classified<\/em> as a case of animal abuse<\/span>, which puts it in the same category as burning cats, organizing cockfights, nailing owls to doors and crucifying rats.<br \/>\n&#8211; In a second step, the practices belonging to this category are <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\"><em>listed in the chronological order<\/em> <\/span>in which they disappeared.<br \/>\n&#8211; This line of facts is then <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\"><em>extrapolated<\/em> <\/span>to conclude that bullfighting should also be condemned in the face of social progress \u2014 and the sooner the better.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 14pt;\">2. Argument of Novelty<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Latin <em>ad novitatem<\/em>; <em>novitas<\/em>, \u201cnovelty; condition of a man who, as the first of his family, attains an eminent position (senator)\u201d (Gaffiot [1934], <em>Novitas<\/em>). <em>Novitas<\/em> is opposed to <em>nobilitas<\/em>. Its argumentative orientation can be positive (the dynamic of the <em>novitas<\/em> is opposed to the decadent <em>nobilitas<\/em>), or negative: the <em>homo novus<\/em>, the \u201cnew man\u201d who comes from nowhere, is suspected.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #800000;\"><strong>2.1 Traditional Orientation\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">The argument of progress reverses the traditional view of the higher esteem accorded to the ancients, especially in the religious sphere:<\/span> \u201cthe <em>novitas<\/em> is the index of heresy\u201d (Le Brun 2011, \u00a71). The argumentative orientation of the judgment \u201c<em>this is a novelty!<\/em>\u201d is reversed.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>argument of progress<\/em> is <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">opposed to the <em><span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">a<\/span>rgument of the decline<\/em> of civilizations<\/span>, which attributes all virtues to the ancients.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>2.2 Contemporary Orientation<\/strong> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The contemporary interpretation combines the argument of novelty with the argument of progress: \u201c<em>What just came out<\/em>\u201d is \u201c<em>super<\/em>\u201d exciting, and \u201c<em>d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu<\/em>\u201d is of little value. <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">This argument values \u200b\u200binnovation over routine<\/span>, and the new over the old. It underlies the call:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Be the first to adopt it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to this rule, the recently published manual would necessarily be better than its predecessors, and, in politics, the newest candidate is already seen as the much-needed savior.<\/p>\n<p>The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/syzygy-e\/\"><span style=\"color: #ffff00; background-color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">syzygy<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/em> is a different vision of progress, as a passage from an imperfect world to a perfect and unchanging one.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 14pt;\">3. Ancients and Moderns<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>The argument of progress structures <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">the eternal dispute between Ancients and Moderns<\/span>. In its radical form, the argument affirms the absolute superiority of the latter over the former, both in the of arts and culture and in the sciences. Ultimately, this superiority would be that of the modern individual over his or her ancestors. In a relativized form, the argument of progress is compatible with the individual superiority of the ancients, \u201c<em>we are dwarfs on the shoulders of the giants<\/em>\u201d, not taller, but able to see further. This is classically refuted by the objection that the lice on the head of the giant&rsquo;s head cannot see any further than the giant.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PROGRESS argument 1.
