Scheme (schema)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"dt \"><span class=\"dtText\">In general language, as a <em>scheme<\/em>, a <em>schema<\/em> is \u00ab\u00a0a graphic sketch or outline\u00a0\u00bb (MW);<br \/>\na \u00ab\u00a0diagrammatic representation\u00a0\u00bb (after MW). In argumentation: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>The words <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong><em>scheme<\/em>, <em>schema<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>are used with this general meaning to refer to any kind of diagram used to represent and clarify the structure of an argumentative phenomenon<em>,<\/em> see <em><a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/convergent-arguments-e\/\">convergent argumentation<\/a> scheme\/schema<\/em>, etc.<br \/>\nToulmin&rsquo;s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/layout-of-argument-toulmin-e\/\">layout of argument<\/a>\u201d is also known as \u201cToulmin&rsquo;s scheme\/schema\u201d or \u201cToulmin argument pattern\u201d (TAP).<\/li>\n<li>An<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/scheme-argument-scheme\/\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">argument scheme<\/span><\/a><\/strong> (pattern) is an abstract or generic representation of a set of concrete argumentations (enthymemes) that share the same structure (scheme).<br \/>\nThe term is an unambiguous equivalent of the shorter classical term, <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/topos-topic-commonplace-argument-scheme-argument-line\/\">topos<\/a> (pl. topoi).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 12pt;\">2. Schematization<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"vg-sseq-entry-item \">\n<p class=\"vg-sseq-entry-item-label\"><span class=\"dt \"><span class=\"dtText\">In common parlance<\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"dt \"><span class=\"dtText\">, <\/span><\/span>to schematize<\/em> is \u00ab\u00a0<span class=\"dt \"><span class=\"dtText\"> to express or represent schematically\u00a0\u00bb (after MW).<\/span> <\/span>In argumentation, Grize&rsquo;s natural logic gives a special meaning to <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/schematization-e\/\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>schematization<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>to denote the product of the linguistic and cognitive operations by which a speaker gives a linguistic expression to his experiences, opinions, and so on.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In this sense, <em>schematization<\/em> is similar to <strong><em>elocutio<\/em><\/strong> in classical <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/rhetorical-argumentation-e\/\">argumentative rhetoric<\/a> (\u00a73.3).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SCHEME &#8211; SCHEMATIZATION 1.
