Something is \u00ab\u00a0normal\u00a0\u00bb when it is the most frequent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">In France, the average age of first sexual intercourse is 16.8 years. Twenty-seven percent of young people are sexually active before 16. On average, the French have 16.7 partners in their lifetime. Only 10% will be satisfied with the same partner for life. On average, our [French] contemporaries perform 121 somersaults per year. [1<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 12pt;\">2. The norm as imperative<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The stastitical norm refers to <em>what is<\/em>, whereas the norm as imperative refers to <em>what should be<\/em>. The latter corresponds to\u00a0 an injunction, which is expressed by a rule belonging to\u00a0the particular institution or domain concerned, for example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Moral and legal domains: <em>Thou shalt not kill.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Ordinary civility: <em>Thou shalt respond when spoken to.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Proper use of language: Y<em>ou shall not say \u00ab\u00a0<\/em>I is<em>\u00ab\u00a0, you shall say <\/em>I am<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Rational behavior: <em>Do not make ambiguous statements. Your tongue shall not be forked.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Road driving: <em>You must remain in control of your vehicle<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 12pt;\">3. Norms in argumentation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The different theories of argumentation have very different relationships with norms. Only some express them as rules.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013 Generalized theories of argumentation<\/strong>, such as the theory of argumentation in language or natural logic, have no relation to moral, truthful or rational norms<br \/>\nWhen the theory of argumentation in language speaks of norms, it refers to <em>linguistic norms<\/em>, which are expressed in terms of the acceptability or nonacceptability of statements and sequences of statements. The considered rules are linguistic rules. See <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/scale-argumentative-scales-laws-of-discourse-e\/\">scale<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/orientation-e\/\">orientation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/rhetorical-argumentation-e\/\">Argumentative rhetoric<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>defines rhetoric as both a form and a content. As a form, it is the \u00ab\u00a0art of speaking well\u00a0\u00bb; as a content, it is the \u00ab\u00a0art of saying what is morally gooda form, the \u201cart of speaking well\u201d, and as content, the \u201cart of saying what is morally good\u201d.<br \/>\nSpeech does not have an autonomous standard. Its norms are externalized as <strong>a moral of discourse<\/strong>, combined with an art of speaking that applies the<strong> rules of good taste<\/strong>,<br \/>\nThese are both diffuse norms, adaptable to the tastes of the time, and difficult to transpose into a set of rules.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013 The <em>New Rhetoric<\/em> <\/strong>takes the <strong>quality of the audience<\/strong> that accepts the argument as a norm, S. <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/persuading-convincing-eng\/\">to persuade, to convince<\/a><br \/>\nThis norm is not provided by a system of rules but by an ideal instance, the universal audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 <strong>Classical logic.<\/strong> As a natural form of argumentation, classical logic uses as a norm the laws of thought, first of all the principle of non-contradiction.\u00a0 The syllogism is evaluated through a system or rules, see syllogistic <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/5318-2\/\">paralogisms.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 Classical Logic.<\/strong> As a natural form of argumentation, classical <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/logic-an-art-of-thinking-a-branch-of-mathematics-e\/\">logic<\/a> uses the laws of thought as a norm, primarily the principle of non-contradiction A syllogism is evaluated through a system of rules; see \u00ab\u00a0syllogistic paralogisms.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 Pragma-dialectics<\/strong> proposes a system of normative rules. See <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/rules-e\/\">rules<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/dicoplantin\/4919-2\/\">evaluations and evaluators.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 Informal logic <\/strong>uses the method of counter-discourse to test the resistance to refutation of a given argumentation.
