{"id":199,"date":"2016-09-21T19:34:34","date_gmt":"2016-09-21T17:34:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/liri.ish-lyon.cnrs.fr\/membres\/cplantin\/?p=178"},"modified":"2016-09-21T19:34:34","modified_gmt":"2016-09-21T17:34:34","slug":"argumentation-in-the-knowledge-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icar.cnrs.fr\/membre\/cplantin\/argumentation-in-the-knowledge-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Argumentation in the Knowledge Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><strong>Abstract :<\/strong> Knowledge society can be characterized as a society where the classical instruments of rhetoric, doxa-based substantial knowledge and topical inference rules, are constantly thwarted by scientific knowledge, calculus and method. In such a context, argument cannot be construed as antagonistic to demonstration and restricted to a purely linguistic inference or to as an \u201cartistic\u201d rhetorical prowess.<br \/>\nA strong research community nowadays focuses on argumentation as a tool for knowledge acquisition and knowledge-based social decision making (ex: \u201c<em>Bees exposed to high levels of pesticides suspected in colony collapse<\/em>\u201d). A concept of argument is needed which could be used to build bridge between the \u00ab\u00a0two cultures\u201d. To take a step in that direction, the form and substance of the argumentative dialog have to be reconsidered. First, the kind of dialogue appropriate to knowledge building is not formal dialog but substantial dialog, the \u201cdefault-reasoning dialog\u201d; Toulmin&rsquo;s scheme can be read as such a reasoning dialog. Second, a core set of \u00ab\u00a0knowledge-based\u00a0\u00bb arguments (arguments connecting objects) can be delimited.
