Lorsqu’il pleut après qu’on a exécuté la danse de la pluie, qu’est-ce que cela signifie ?

Rien. C’est exactement comme s’il pleuvait sans que la danse ait été exécutée. Accomplir le rite pour “sauver” le soleil ou la lune des éclipses, exécuter la danse de la pluie en période de sécheresse, pratiquer la divination avant de prendre des décisions importantes, tout cela ne vise pas à obtenir ce qu’on demande mais à entretenir la culture. Ce qui pour l’homme de bien est culturel, pour l’homme de peu est surnaturel. La première attitude est faste, la seconde néfaste

You pray for rain and it rains. Why? For no particular reason, I say. It is just as though you had not prayed for rain and it rained anyway. The sun and moon undergo an eclipse and you try to save them ; a drought occurs and you pray for rain; you consult the arts of divination before making a decision on some important matter. But it is not as though you could hope accomplish anything by such ceremonies. They are done merely for ornament, but the common people regard them as supernatural. He who considers them as ornament is fortunate; he who regard them as supernatural is unfortunate

Note :

When it rains after you pray for rain, it is just like when it rains when you didn’t pray for rain. Yet during a drought officials must still pray for rain — not because it has any effect on the natural world, but because it has effect on people. What Xunzi believes ritual does will be examined later.
